TOUR PLAN

01

Day one: Chaumont-sur-Loire, Chenonceau, Amboise and Clos Lucé

  • Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire celebrates a 15th-century love affair between the Count of Beaujeu and Catherine de Médicis. Today, it is known for its romantic setting overlooking the Loire River, its contemporary garden art installations, and the renowned International Garden Festival. Notable features include beautiful Majolica tiles and the “Hanging of the Planets and Days” tapestry.
  • Château de Chenonceau, often referred to as “The Ladies' Castle,” has a romantic history shaped by five women, especially Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Médicis. Diane was gifted the château by King Henry II, designing its iconic gardens, while Catherine later expanded the château with the gallery that spans the River Cher.
  • Château d’Amboise and Clos Lucé are famously linked to Leonardo da Vinci, who spent his final years here. Though not a traditional romantic tale, the château reflects the intellectual romance between King François I and Leonardo, who shared a deep bond. End your day with a night in a romantic castle-like mansion or in the medieval part of the historic town of Tours.
02

Day 2: Villandry, Azay-le-Rideau, and Château de Ussé

  • Villandry Castle is renowned for its Renaissance-inspired gardens, considered among the finest in Europe. The ornamental and vegetable terraces seamlessly blend with the castle’s architecture, creating a vivid, colorful display. The intricate Moorish wooden ceiling, reassembled from the palace of the Dukes of Maqueda in Spain, is another highlight.
  • Azay-le-Rideau, one of the most romantic Renaissance castles, mirrors its beauty in the Indre River, creating a picturesque reflection. The 19th-century interiors, loggia staircase adorned with portraits of French royalty, and park with exotic trees add to its charm.
  • Château d'Ussé, said to have inspired the tale of "Sleeping Beauty," is a fairytale castle with towers and turrets, blending medieval, Gothic, and Renaissance styles. It features 18th-century Brussels tapestries and a wax doll re-creation of the "Sleeping Beauty" story, enhancing its magical atmosphere.
  • End the tour by driving back to Paris or spending another night in a fairy-tale mansion.
