TOUR PLAN

01

Strasbourg

  • Explore Strasbourg’s Jewish landmarks, including the Great Synagogue, the ancient mikveh, and Holocaust memorials, while learning about local traditions and the tragic Valentine’s Day Massacre.
  • Take a walking tour of the city, passing key sites such as the Strasbourg Cathedral, Place Kléber, and the “Jewish Bridge.” Visit memorial plaques and markers detailing the persecution and reestablishment of the Jewish community.
  • Stroll through the medieval district, including the former Jewish ghetto near Rue des Juifs, and learn about the early Jewish community, its expulsions, and the tragic events of the Black Death era.
  • Visit the old Jewish Cemetery (Cimetière de la Porte de l’Hôpital), with gravestones dating back to the 14th century.
  • Optional: Explore the Alsatian Museum, which includes exhibits on rural Jewish life, traditional garments, ritual objects, and the integration of Jewish and Alsatian cultures.
02

Lunch Suggestion

Enjoy Alsatian cuisine with kosher-friendly options, or try a Strasbourg café offering dishes inspired by Jewish-Alsatian culinary traditions.

03

Colmar & Southern Alsatian Heritage

  • After lunch, travel to Colmar (about a 1-hour drive), a beautifully preserved medieval town known for its canal district, “Little Venice.”
  • Visit the Colmar Synagogue, built in 1832 with a façade inspired by Kabbalistic symbolism. Inside, an opaque glass pyramid tracks the sun’s path, bathing the space in soft light.
  • Stop at the Jewish Cemetery of Colmar, dating back to the early 1800s and still in use today.
  • Optional: visit the Unterlinden Museum. While not exclusively Jewish, it houses artifacts related to Jewish life in Alsace, including ritual objects and a model of a prayer room (shtiebel).
  • Return to Strasbourg or stay overnight in Colmar at a charming Alsatian spa hotel.
04

Optional Itineraries for Further Exploration

  • Day 1: Follow the trail from Rosheim to Obernai, with stops at the Rosenwiller cemetery, Benfeld’s synagogue and its 1895 organ, and Obernai’s restored synagogue.
  • Day 2: Visit Bischheim’s ritual bath museum, Pfaffenhoffen’s museum in a former synagogue, the synagogues of Ingwiller and Haguenau, and Jungholtz’s historic cemetery.
  • Day 3: Explore Bouxwiller’s Judéo-Alsacien Museum, stroll the gardens at Soultz’s Bucheneck Castle Museum, and end the day at Reichshoffen synagogue, home to artist Ben Jack Nash.
